Experiments on the effect of the molar ratio of CaCO3 to Pb2+ (Ca/Pb molar ratio) was carried out at fixed Pb2+ initial concentration at 500 mg/L, the volume ratio of milling balls to the used solution at 10%, the milling time at 200 min and the milling speed at 200 rpm. The molar ratio of Ca/Pb was varied at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. The changes in Pb removal rate are shown in Fig. 1(a), and XRD patterns of the residues are shown in Fig. 1(b). Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be used for lead removal. However, due to compact structure and high crystallinity of CaCO3, the utilization of CO3(2-) is low and Pb removal only stays at the extent of physical adsorption and surface precipitation. In this research, a wet stirred ball milling process was introduced to induce nearly stoichiometric reactions between lead salts of nitrate, chloride or sulfate with CaCO3 by consequently updating fresh surfaces of CaCO3.
